A Drop of Ink in The Ocean

There is someone in this picture, and if it takes you a while to find him, he wins.

Camouflage expert, Liu Bolin

Camouflage expert, Liu Bolin

Chinese Performance artist Liu Bolin, otherwise known as the invisible man, paints over his entire body in order to blend in as seamlessly as possible into his surroundings. He makes me think of a ninja, and that makes me think he’s awesome.  His reasons for this form of expression are quite personal. After graduating from school, he had trouble finding work. his social relations were non-existent. life was tough. the final straw for this Beijing artist was when the chinese government shut down his art studio in 2005. Feeling unwanted and not useful in a society that just keeps kicking his ass. Liu Bolin decides to artistically demonstrate his isolation and rejection from society.

His photos (taking often more than ten hours to get the right angle and feel) also show how city surroundings affect the people living in them.

These pictures are astounding. The effect on my self is immense. I see this background, nothing complex, often a key component of everyday life. and I see this ghostly figure of a man with eyes closed. It slightly creeps me out, but I can’t help but be amazed at the artist’s “silent protest”.
